Introduction
FTTH/ODN/OTN China Conference (FOOCC), organized by ACT International, is the largest and most successful conference of its kind in China. FOOCC is the combination of FTTH China Conference founded in 2005, ODN China Forum founded in 2010, and the new track OTN China Conference scheduled for 2011. FTTH China Conference achieved great success for 6 consecutive years, and the first ODN China Forum in 2010 was also a hit. The number of attendees in 2010 exceeded 600, with more than 150 companies participated. Cumulatively there were more than 200 companies participated in the last 6 years. They were from various segments of the industry such as fiber, optical cable, chips, components, modules, subsystems, system equipment, test and measurement, system integration, installation and construction, operators, research institutions, non-profit organizations, media, etc.
FOOCC is ¡°The Platform¡± for sponsors to promote their technologies, display their latest products, and enhance their company images. It is the classroom for FTTH, ODN and OTN industry executives to acquire technical information, industry trends and market dynamics. It is also the conference for minds sharing and information exchanges. Vendors and buyers build relationships, extend cooperation and seek for business opportunities at FOOCC.
FOOCC is a two-day conference, co-located with China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE) in Shenzhen in early September every year. It is supported by the industry most famous trade magazine Lightwave China (the official publication) and Lightwave magazine.
The China FTTH, ODN and OTN Markets
FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) -- Reorganization of carriers was completed in 2008, and all three carriers became full services carriers. The carriers needed to develop their own optical access networks rapidly. Year 2009 marked the beginning of massive deployment of FTTX networks in China. China quickly became the largest FTTX market by end of 2009. In early 2010 the large scale deployment of 3G networks and the driving force towards triple network convergence also accelerated the growth of FTTX market. Optical networks constructions are rapidly implementing in almost all major cities, highly increased the access bandwidth. It's estimated that FTTH users will increase from 8.32 millions of last year to 23.25 millions in this year, and may rise to 40.05 millions in 2012 (source: Telecom Institute of MII, Changjiang Securities Company). Based on 1000Yuan/line, the market size for FTTH in China will be 15 billion Yuan in 2011 and 17 billion Yuan in 2012. China is the fastest growing FTTH market in the world.
ODN (Optical Distribution Network) -- ODN is an important part of FTTX networks. How to improve cost efficiency in ODN deployment will be a key issue of the large scale FTTX deployment in China. Currently ODN accounts for approximately 60% of the total cost for FTTH deployment, reflects a market of 9 billion Yuan of this year and over 10 billion Yuan in 2012. Despite the market potentials, ODN deployment is also facing challenges of the lack of standards for related products and deployment, difficulties for network constructions in old area, ODN maintenance issues, etc.
OTN (Optical Transport Network) -- In recent years, all three carriers in China tested OTN technology and began network level field trials, in some locations the legacy networks were upgraded to OTNs. In April 2010, China Mobile started the first national-level OTN construction project, which marked the breakthrough on OTN application in the backbone network. As OTN technology develops rapidly, both local and international vendors are introducing new OTN equipment. OTN becomes the priority option for new backbone network.
In China, The bandwidth of fixed and mobile internet access are lifted rapidly, the merge of the triple network are also accelerating. These contribute to the traffic of the metro network and backbone network, transport network is under pressure for expansion; and at the same time, high bandwidth, real-time services such as internet video, IPTV, video conferencing, etc. will require the transport network to provide large granularity channel, flexibility and reliability. These are exactly the advantages of OTN. The expansion of the future transport networks will depends on deploying new OTN backbone lines and SONET/SDH network being substituted gradually by OTN. China has the largest optical network and the largest number of internet users in the world, inevitably it will be the largest potential market for OTN.
