Overview of China's FTTx Market and What Lies Ahead

New Broadband China initiative may change forecast

In mid-August 2013, China's State Council released the Broadband China initiative setting broadband penetration and bandwidth goals. The goal for wireline broadband access is 50% household penetration by 2015 with FTTH services in all urban areas by 2020. Bandwidth goals include 50Mbps for urban households and 12Mbps for rural households by 2020. China is the world's biggest consumer of FTTx equipment but lags behind developed countries in broadband household penetration and connection speeds. The Broadband China initiative will fuel ongoing spending by China's communications service providers, which in turn supports China's component and equipment vendors, which in turn improves broadband penetration and speed. Moreover, this initiative is needed to boost volumes and thereby revenues for China's PON component and equipment vendors, which are suffering from severe price pressures and shipment declines.
