Next Generation PON Optical Layer Management

Abstract of the Presentation
The large deployment size of PON networks today is creating the need for more sophisticated management capabilities. Carriers increasingly have the need to monitor, locate, and manage faults along a growing number of passive fiber optic cables. Optical-layer management – alongside active PON equipment or built directly into OLTs – can provide the raw tools for monitor capability. Some optics and PON vendors have already begun development of such tools. A few carriers, as with the case presented in this evaluation, have implemented complex operational procedures to utilize these capabilities. In both equipment and implementation procedure development, however, much room for improvement remains. Standards work is underway to meet needs for industry-wide optical-layer management capabilities.
Speaker’s Biography
Jay Teborek directs Carrier Marketing and Relationships activity for Broadcom throughout Asia; he was previously Managing Director of Carrier Markets for Teknovus, which was acquired by Broadcom in 2010. Mr. Teborek has eighteen years experience working with carriers and infrastructure suppliers, primarily focused on the penetration of new IT and telecom technologies in Asia. Prior to Broadcom, Mr. Teborek was Director of Asia Business Development and Senior Director of Strategic Sales at Comverse Network Systems. Mr. Teborek has held business development and software engineering positions with BellSouth International, Potomac Systems, and the US Embassy in Beijing, Commercial Service.
He has a bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison (US) and Masters of Business Administration degrees from INSEAD (France/Singapore) and China’s Tsinghua University. In his graduate work at Tsinghua, Mr. Teborek has published analyses of five national fiber infrastructure projects in Asia. He currently provides consultation to national governments on infrastructure projects through his role as Chairman of the Regulatory Committee of the Fiber to the Home Council, Asia Pacific. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

How 40G and 100Gbps Transmission Technologies Evolve and Coexist in the Carrier Networks over the Next Ten Years

Due to the rapid proliferation of mobile computing platforms driving the widespread adoption of video streaming, IPTV services, and emerging cloud computing applications, service providers worldwide are rolling out network capacity upgrades to address the explosive bandwidth demands. As bit rates increase from 10G to 40g to 100G, networks must fundamentally shift from TDM based networks to more efficient packet based networks based on Optical Transport Network (OTN) standards. The 40G and 100G movement combined with other technologies, such as coherent optics, ROADM, and OTN switching, creates a significant undercurrent leading to significantly lower transmission cost per bit for service provides resulting in CAPEX and OPEX savings over time. This paper explores the requirements and rate of adoption of each 40Gbps and 100Gbps transmission speeds in the carrier networks, related technologies, and market forces driving it.

PON technology is becoming more and more popular where GPON is taking the lead in term of new deployments, service providers and worldwide regions. While the main driver to fiber access is growing bandwidth demand by end users, there are many other drivers that push the PON industry to invest in next generation PONs. This session will discuss various drivers to invest in next generation XGPON. Drivers like emerging video services and mainly 3D-TV, emerging mobile technologies like LTE and the need for efficient and future proof backhaul technology, higher split ratio and long extended reach to allow CO consolidation. The session will discuss both the market requirements and the technologies that enable them. It will cover the market dynamics in different regions and the lessons learned from early field trials. In addition it will discuss the requirement of the XGPON systems and the solution that the optics and silicon industry will bring, including port density in the OLT, power saving and level of integration.

Atsushi Sugitatsu received B.S in Physics and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) from Kyoto university, Japan. He received M.S degree in EE from California Institute of Technology, USA. He joined Mitsubishi in 1988 and has been working on lasers and optoelectronic devices R&D, including LD/PD, TOSA/ROSA, transceivers, over 20 years. He is a member of IEEE Photonics Society, the Optical Society (OSA), the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineer (IEICE), and Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).

Edward Doe serves as Associate Director, Switch Products, for the Infrastructure & Networking Group (ING) at Broadcom Corporation. In this role, Doe is responsible for Service Provider product management in the StrataXGS Product Line. Doe has served in a variety of product management roles during his six years of tenure at Broadcom, focused on markets from service provider to data center and enterprise networking and has taken part in several key acquisitions in the networking space. Prior to Broadcom, Doe served at Nortel and Bay Networks in various technical and business leadership roles, focused on next generation Ethernet/IP switch systems and associated technologies. Doe attended Stanford University for his graduate studies in Electrical Engineering, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

Today, with the rapid expansion of FTTH, mechanical splices and field installable connectors which can easily splice and terminate the optical fibers are widely and successfully deployed in private enterprise networks and worldwide FTTx markets. In this paper, we introduce the structures, applications, characteristics and reliability test results for mechanical splice and field installable connectors.
